First ASF cases reported in Albania’s domestic swine

Although cases in wild boar were confirmed in the southeast European country earlier this year, African swine fever (ASF) virus has been detected for the first time in a herd of domestic pigs in Albania.

In the southeast European Balkans state of Albania, African swine fever (ASF) virus has been detected again following a brief hiatus.

Presence of the virus was confirmed in 71 pigs in a backyard herd in Lezhe, according to the official notification to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). Eighteen of the animals died, and the rest were culled to halt the further spread of the infection. Contact with infected wild species was cited as the most likely source of infection.
