While just three outbreaks of the disease have been confirmed in Sri Lanka, the repercussions of recently emerged African swine fever (ASF) are putting huge pressure on farming livelihoods.
Since the currently circulating ASF virus was first detected in Asia, outbreaks have been reported in 20 countries, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
