South Korea to expand overseas corn, wheat farming
South Korea is making plans to secure 380,000 hectares of overseas farmland by 2018 in order to grow crops like corn and wheat and secure a more stable food supply as prices continue to rise, according to the country's agriculture ministry. The government plans to help South Korean companies lease arable land or buy stakes in overseas firms, prioritizing in countries such as the Philippines, Cambodia, Ukraine, Indonesia and Russia.

Kansas State holds advanced feed manufacturing course
Kansas State University's Department of Grain Science and Industry held an advanced feed manufacturing short course for 27 feed industry professionals in June. The course was offered in partnership with the American Feed Industry Association and the National Grain and Feed Association.

GMP+ International
GMP+ International issued Country Note BCN-NL1 Antibiotics-free feed for certification bodies. The Country Note contains conditions for the production of antibiotics-free animal feed as a supplementary (non-mandatory) certificate for all animal feed manufacturers that are already certified for GMP+ within the animal feed production scope, according to GMP+.

Despite the Vietnamese economy having to cope with inflation, the country’s livestock sector is booming. One of the oldest feed companies in the country, Proconco, recently celebrated its 20th birthday, and is recognised throughout the industry by its Stork logo.

France drought causes animal feed shortage, early livestock slaughtering
One of the most severe droughts in a half-century in France has caused a shortage in animal feed, resulting in a 10% increase in livestock slaughtering, France’s Les Echos reported. France began slaughtering its milk cows nearly 10 months ago, according to the country’s national crop office FranceAgriMer.

Poultry overtakes pig as EU’s largest animal feed segment
For the first time, poultry overtook pig as the largest feed segment in the European Union, according to figures prepared by Europe’s feed federation FEFAC for its latest annual congress. Poultry showed an annual growth rate of 3% to reach 50.89 million metric tons, whereas pig feed production recorded only a change of -0.1% to stay at 49.65 million metric tons.

Association points out lack of railroad competition for animal feed transport
The National Grain and Feed Association said that while adequate competition to discipline the market behavior of rail carriers exists in some marketplace situations, such as in the case with other modes of transportation, cost-effective solutions are not in place for rail customers when a lack of market competition exists. NGFA submitted these comments to the federal Surface Transportation Board and suggested ways to restore balance in the railroad industry for feed transportation.

CPM, a supplier of process equipment and technology for the animal feed, oilseed, biofuels and human food-processing industries, and Pellet Technology LLC announce the formation of a strategic alliance that will help bring sustainable, renewable energy to electric utilities and biofuels producers. Pellet Technology has developed a complete supply chain solution for biomass users that includes feedstock supply contracting, harvest management and production technology to turn corn stover into PowerPellets on an economic and environmentally sound basis, according to the company.

Victam International highlights innovation in animal feed manufacturing
Representatives of the feed and grain sectors from more than 100 companies were in Germany in early May to take part in the 2011 edition of the specialist trade show Victam International, that deals exclusively with grain processing and the manufacture of animal feeds. With European-style mega-booths for the big feed equipment players, the show also included demonstrations of some major machinery.

Kenya orders corn imports for animal feed to offset drought disaster
Kenya's government has ordered extra imports of corn to help boost the country's grain reserves after declaring the current drought a national disaster, according to reports. The corn will be used to help affected livestock and people, according to Kenya President Mwai Kibaki.
