Replacing livestock antibiotics in feed
Industry discussions on effectively replacing livestock antibiotics are never ending as new feed additives keep appearing in the animal agribusiness market. Now that high animal feed prices are making it difficult to profitably raise pigs and poultry, many farmers are looking for ways to remove additives that do not have a strong performance record.
Carbon Emissions Reduction
Delacon studies feed additives as carbon footprint reducers
The key to managing the livestock industry’s carbon footprint while continuing to supply the demand for meat likely lies in continued increases in efficiency, according to Delacon, which has focused on improved performance and economic profit, and the reduction of ammonia and odor emissions, in its product development.

European Food Safety Authority rejects study questioning Monsanto corn
The European Food Safety Authority has concluded that a recent paper raising concerns about the potential toxicity of Monsanto Co.'s genetically modified maize NK603 and of a herbicide containing glyphosate is of insufficient scientific quality to be considered as valid for risk assessment. The authority's initial review found that the design, reporting and analysis of the study, as outlined in the paper, are inadequate.

Improving veal calf growth with soluble fibers
A number of tests have been conducted regarding short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides over the past 20 years, and the conclusion is clear: dietary supplements of short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides for calves result in higher performance. This information, if implemented, could result in substantial economic benefits for both feed manufacturers and breeders.

Fungus grown on ethanol leftovers could make good animal feed
A high-protein fungus grown in the leftovers of ethanol production could be dried and used as a substitute for corn or soybean meal in chicken and pig feed, according to researchers at Iowa State University. During the feeding trials, which focused on nursery chickens and pigs, researchers found that pig performance wasn’t impacted when dried fungi were substituted for corn or soybean meal, said Nicholas Gabler, an assistant professor of animal science.
