US feed industry urges FDA to continue regulatory discretion for ingredients

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration should continue to exercise regulatory discretion to maintain the continued availability of a number of unapproved animal drug products, said the National Grain and Feed Association in a statement to the FDA. The types of animal feed and pet food products currently regulated by the FDA that could fall within the category of “unapproved animal drugs” include products formulated from animal feed ingredients that help manage, from a dietary and nutritional standpoint, a specific disease or condition under a licensed veterinarian’s professional supervision, said the NGFA.

BioResource International to build feed manufacturing facility in China

North Carolina-based BioResource International Inc. has announced that it signed a formal agreement to construct a feed manufacturing facility in China. BRI partnered with Taiwan-based Yung Zip Chemical Industrial Co. Ltd. and Yung Shin Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. to purchase land and begin construction on the plant, which will be used to produce BRI’s natural feed additives for chicken and pig nutrition.

Sandalwood in animal feed may reduce E. coli, listeria growth

Adding sandalwood (or a sandalwood analog) to animal feed may reduce the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli and listeria in the rumen, according to a research team led by Professor Jamie Newbold from the United Kingdom's Aberystwyth University, in conjunction with the Compton Group. Trials in a rumen simulating fermenter (Rusitec) confirmed that Javanol, a sandalwood analog, reduced methane production by up to 25%.

Quality Technology Calsporin supply unaffected by Japan disaster

Quality Technology International Inc., the North American distributor of direct-fed microbial Calsporin has released a statement assuring North American clients that there are no concerns about providing continuous supplies of Calsporin to the poultry and animal markets. Kemin has doubled the company’s production capacity and added new technologies to its manufacturing portfolio through an expansion to its manufacturing facility in Gummidipoondi, India. The new facility will manufacture KemTRACE Organic Trace Minerals for poultry, dairy and aqua, as well as provide additional blending capacity and new research and quality assurance facilities.

Maryland state legislature introduces bill to ban arsenic from chicken feed

Maryland Sen. Paul G. Pinsky and delegate Tom Hucker have introduced a bill into the state legislature that would ban arsenic-based drugs commonly used in the feed of commercial poultry operations. Arsenic is found in chicken feed in the form of roxarsone, which is added to control coccidiosis and promote growth.
