India considers ban on key antibiotics for animals

In order to ease growing concerns of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the Indian population, the authorities may ban the use of two classes of the drugs in poultry and livestock.

Production, import and distribution of two types of antibiotics may be subject to a future ban for use in India’s farm animals, reports Economic Times.

The two drugs — chloramphenicol and nitrofurans — are important treatments for urinary tract infections caused by bacteria in humans.
