Explosion was heard by fire chief who was outside the fire station
A Fieldale Farms feed mill was badly damaged and one employee received third-degree burns in an explosion during the morning of July 11.
The situation was immediately responded to, as Baldwin Fire Chief Joe Roy and another firefighter were standing outside the fire station when they heard the blast. Roy told WDUN, they started looking around and saw smoke coming from the top of the mill.
Upon arrival, the building had been evacuated. One employee was still inside, but after emergency responders searched the building, he was found unharmed. Another employee was transported to a hospital after receiving first-degree burns to the rface and second-degree burns to the arm.
An exact damage estimate was not available, but Roy said there was significant damage to many areas of the building.
Fieldale Farms, according to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database, is headquartered in Baldwin and operates two feed mills. It also has two slaughter plants and one further-processing plant. The company produced 16 million pounds of ready-to-cook chicken on a weekly basis in 2016.
