Indian company will also broaden its vaccine portfolio

Hyderabad, India-based Brilliant Biopharma plans to diversify into animal nutrition, as well as to broaden its present portfolio of vaccines for cattle, sheep, goats and dogs.

With an investment of INR1.3 billion (US$18.2 million), Brilliant Biopharma is set to increase its range of vaccines by a factor of two, and to enter the market for animal nutrition.

According to Hindu Business Line, the company is already the largest producer of vaccines against foot and mouth disease (FMD), with annual output of around 300 million doses. In addition, it manufactures and sells five other vaccines — four against bacteria and one other anti-viral — as well as antibiotics.

One target for the announced investment is the firm’s FMD vaccine production facility at Pasha Myalaram, aimed at boosting output to 400 million doses per year. In addition, INR300 million will be spent setting up a unit at Bollaram for animal feed supplements, including minerals.

Current annual turnover by Brilliant Biopharma is INR1.6 billion, which is forecast to rise to INR2 billion by 2021.

This increase in turnover is expected to stem from exports of INR300 million to the Middle East, as well as an enlarged portfolio. Among the new products scheduled for launch by Brilliant Biopharma as soon as next year are a vaccine for sheep and goats against peste des petits ruminants (PPR), and new prophylactics for cattle and dogs. These were developed by the 25 members of the firm’s research and development team.

Aim to be a ‘one-stop company’

Founded around 2000, Brilliant Biopharma aims to become a “one-stop company for animal vaccines and a range of animal health care, feed products and solutions,” according to the firm’s chairman and managing director, B. Moura. She estimates the market for animal health care products to be worth INR48 billion.

In a report by Business Today this year, Moura said Brilliant Biopharma is among the leading suppliers of veterinary anti-parasitic products, which are used in dairy cow de-worming programs run by several state governments and milk cooperatives.

She added that other products in the company’s pipeline are vaccines against sheep pox, goat pox and rabies.

Daughter of politician and businessman T.G. Venkatesh, Moura sees Brilliant Biopharma as the fastest-growing animal health company.

The firm’s expansion is in line with the One Health concept of the World Health Organization and others, according to Moura. The concept aims to improve global public health outcomes and food safety, as well as tackling antimicrobial resistance.

This year, India’s Natural Remedies was awarded received the Best Healthcare Brand of 2019 award at a ceremony in Delhi. It is one of the country’s leading herbal animal health care companies.
