Cargill sells feed mill in Pennsylvania to Risser Grain

Cargill on August 30 closed on the sale of its feed mill and grain elevator in Martinsburg, Pa., to Holtwood, Pa.-based Risser Grain LLC. Under the terms of the agreement, Risser Grain is acquiring the property and assets such as machinery and equipment.

For this reason, Alltech and Kentucky State University (KSU) have formalized a joint research alliance to develop sustainable farming techniques and modern farming models.

Council reports record-breaking $17.3 billion in crop losses in 2012

Extreme weather forced the Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIP) to pay out a record-breaking $17.3 billion in crop losses last year, much of which could have been prevented using water-smart strategies, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. Payments made to farmers during the 2012 growing season to cover losses from drought, heat and hot wind alone accounted for 80 percent of all farm losses, with many Upper Midwest and Great Plains states hit hardest.

UK grains authority invests in nutrition research

The United Kingdom’s Home Grown Cereals Authority (HGCA) is investing £700,000 in research to help update nutrient management recommendations. Commencing this autumn and focusing on nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S), the four research projects are being conducted by ADAS in collaboration with 12 industry partners who will contribute a further £250,000 cash/in-kind funding.

Volunteer soybeans put 2013 corn crop at risk of pests, diseases

One of the biggest threats to the emerging 2013 corn crop in Nebraska and South Dakota is the presence of volunteer soybeans, according to Chip Flory, ProFarmer editor and crop analyst. Flory shared that observation on August 27 during the Grain & Meat Outlook Webinar, hosted by WATT Global Media and Farm Journal.

New product safety requirements focus at annual feed, pet food conference

Feed, feed ingredient and pet food manufacturers will hear the latest on major new product safety requirements likely to be implemented by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) during the fourth annual Feed and Pet Food Joint Conference, scheduled for September 25-26 in Indianapolis, Ind. Corn, soybeans rally as hot weather threatens US crop yields

Corn rose the most in 14 months and soybean futures jumped the most since 2011 as hot, dry Midwest weather threatens U.S. crop yields, according to reports. Temperatures are expected to average as much as 14 degrees F above normal through the first week of September, with little rain in the Midwest.
