The fungal disease vomitoxin is being reported in large amounts in Southwestern Ontario's corn crop, and some field tests are coming back with high levels of the type of vomitoxin that pigs are particularly sensitive to, according to reports. The disease, which appears in overly wet conditions and can sicken livestock if consumed in high concentrations, is already being monitored by the industry.

Russia imposes ban on live pigs from Germany
Russia has imposed a ban on live pigs from Germany after elevated levels of dioxin were found in sugar beet pulp, a feed ingredient from sugar producer Pfeifer & Langen. Dioxin levels were found to be 1.0-1.6 nanograms per kilo, slightly above the permitted 0.75 nanograms per kilo, according to reports.

US feed industry urges FDA to continue regulatory discretion for ingredients
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration should continue to exercise regulatory discretion to maintain the continued availability of a number of unapproved animal drug products, said the National Grain and Feed Association in a statement to the FDA. The types of animal feed and pet food products currently regulated by the FDA that could fall within the category of “unapproved animal drugs” include products formulated from animal feed ingredients that help manage, from a dietary and nutritional standpoint, a specific disease or condition under a licensed veterinarian’s professional supervision, said the NGFA.

New FDA salmonella draft policy clarifies US animal feed issues
A new Food and Drug Administration draft policy takes a more science- and risk-based approach to regulating salmonella in animal feed, according to the National Grain and Feed Association. Under the FDA’s draft policy, the agency identifies eight salmonella serotypes that are of regulatory concern to animal health.
