Aim of pledge is to take a more proactive approach to biosecurity

Fifty companies in New Zealand have signed the Biosecurity Business Pledge to protect the country against pests and diseases.

According to the Biosecurity Business Pledge website, “The Biosecurity Business Pledge gives businesses a framework to be part of the biosecurity team protecting New Zealand from pests and diseases.

“Businesses pledge to integrate proactive biosecurity practices into their activities and supply chains.

“Taking a proactive approach to biosecurity helps protect New Zealand’s economy, unique natural environment and its way of life for future generations.

“The Biosecurity Business Pledge has been created by New Zealand business with the support of Business New Zealand.”

Organizations that signed the pledge include dairy co-operative Fonterra, Auckland Airport, food manufacturer Goodman Fielder, supermarket chain Countdown and logistics and transport company Mainfreight.

“The aim of the pledge is to take a more proactive approach to biosecurity by improving the partnership between government and businesses, to help prevent unnecessary costs and disruptions for Kiwi businesses, communities and the wider New Zealand economy,” said Biosecurity Minister Damien O’Connor.

Previously participated in ASF forum

In April and May, New Zealand was one of 15 countries that participated in a forum that brought together industry leaders and government officials to discuss the potential of African swine fever (ASF) coming to the Americas.

The forum, a mixture of panel and interactive discussions, generated a consensus on short-, medium- and long-term plans for regional prevention and readiness activities. The goal was that the countries in the Americas can come to a unified decision on action strategies.

Officials from China, the United States, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Denmark, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Bolivia and the Czech Republic attended the event.
